The 4C's of diamonds

Carat, color, clarity, and cut are the four variables that determine a diamond's price. Understanding how they trade off against each other is the difference between spending well and overspending.

Carat — weight, not size

Carat is a measure of weight, not physical size. One carat equals 0.2 grams. Because carat is weight, larger stones also weigh more, so price rises steeply with carat. But a deeper-cut stone of the same carat looks smaller face-up than a shallow one, which is the trap. A well-cut 1.0ct can look larger than a poorly-cut 1.2ct.

Color — graded D through Z

Diamonds are graded from D (completely colorless) down to Z. The scale is alphabetical, not numerical, and it exists because there is no absolute "no color" diamond. Most engagement diamonds sit in the D to J range. Below K, warmth becomes visible in the facet pattern. The jump from K to L is noticeable to the eye; differences within D to H often are not.

Clarity — FL/IF to I3

Clarity grades how free a stone is of inclusions, graded FL and IF (flawless and internally flawless) down through VVS, VS, SI, and I1–I3. Clarity grading is done at 10x magnification. Most eye-visible differences only begin around I1, and VS grades are visually clean when set.

Cut — the grade you cannot see

Cut is the only grade applied to a faceted stone that measures how it performs: how light enters, reflects, and returns to the eye. It is a proportion, symmetry, and polish assessment. Two stones can be identical on the other three C's and differ by 30% or more in price on cut alone. Cut is graded on the same GIA scale as mined diamonds: Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

How to prioritize

If you are working to a budget, the order we recommend is cut, then carat, then color, then clarity. Cut drives brilliance and face-up size, so it is the most visible. Color is a close second because grade is permanently visible. Clarity is last because most inclusions are invisible in a set ring, and you can drop to VS1 or even SI1 with no visible difference — as long as you have seen it. See is SI1 clear enough.

Frequently asked questions

If I can only optimize one of the 4C's, which should I choose?

Cut. It controls brilliance and apparent size, and the price difference within the same carat is the largest of any of the four. A well-cut smaller stone looks better than a poorly-cut larger one.
